ORLANDO, Florida (AP) – Tesla automatic driving system hit a Florida Highway Patrol cruiser on Saturday in downtown Orlando and missed its driver, who was going to help a disabled car.
At the beginning of this month, the US government launched a proper investigation for Tesla’s Autopilot driving mode after a series of similar accidents with parked emergency vehicles.
The officer, who was hit by his boat just before 5am on Saturday, was turning on his emergency headlights and was on his way to a damaged car when Tesla crashed into the left side of the passengers and collided with another, said traffic police spokesman Lt. Kim Montes told The Orlando Sentinel.
According to the report, 27-year-old man and driver of the car have suffered few injuries and no officers were injured.
Tesla has not yet responded to its email that was sent by the authorities.
Autopilot is being frequently misused by Tesla drivers with very irresponsible and depending on the programmed car, who are caught drunk driving or riding in the back seat while the car was down the California highway.
Tesla makers uses a system that is based in cameras with many computer powers performing and radars if required to find any obstacles. These highly programmed systems then search what problems are there and then decide what action to be taken. But researchers said it had a problem with parked emergency vehicles and round trucks on the way.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a Tesla investigation after covering 11 accidents since 2018 when Tesla’s cars or pilots attacked cars where first responders used flashing lights, headlights, flashing arc board or accident warnings.
In those accidents, 17 people were injured and one died, the NHTSA said. Investigations can lead to retaliation or another act of coercion.
The National Transportation Safety Board, which has also investigated Tesla’s crash, has suggested that NHTSA and Tesla limit the use of autopilot in areas where they can operate safely. Tesla needs to improve its system to ensure that drivers pay attention and not rely on the auto pilot program of the car.
According to few reports, last year NTSB targeted Tesla Car Company and the drivers for their irresponsible behaviors as well as law tax by NHTSA for two accidents in which Tesla car had crashes under a tractor trailer.
